Animal science is the home for three undergraduate majors: Agricultural and Environmental Education, Animal Science, and Animal Science and Management.  

AGRICULTURAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

The Agricultural and Environmental Education major allows students to explore diverse agricultural and environmental topics and aids in their understanding of basic and advanced concepts in both the natural and social sciences. Graduates have found employment in public schools, non-profit organizations, financial institutions, state, federal, and international agencies, nature preserves, community organizations and in sustainable development.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

  1. To understand the natural and social science principles associated with the various disciplines  that undergird agricultural and environmental systems.
  2. To describe the application of agricultural and environmental system principles and their application in educational, organizational, and community-based settings.
  3. To illustrate the basic skills necessary to interpret, gather and process information in the agricultural and environmental sciences.
  4. To effectively communicate (orally and in writing) about agricultural and environmental concepts and issues.
  5. To contribute to solving problems as team member, collaborators and community organizers.

ANIMAL SCIENCE

The Animal Science major offers a variety of opportunities to students who enjoy animals and wish to study their biology and care.

  1. Understanding of the scientific principles and physiological mechanisms associated with the disciplines in Animal Science.
  2. Ability to describe the application of these principles to the care and sustainable management of domestic and captive animals.
  3. Demonstrate the basic skills necessary to perform practical tasks associated with animal care.
  4. Illustrate the basic skills necessary to interpret information gathered in a research setting.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to communicate through writing, speech and graphical displays.

ANIMAL SCIENCE AND MANAGEMENT

The Animal Science and Management major focuses on preparing students for a management career in agribusiness and related industries. The major provides an extensive base of courses in agribusiness, including marketing, economics, and accounting. At the same time, the student receives foundation courses in the animal sciences. This major attracts students who want a fundamental background in the natural sciences and business management.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

  1. Understanding of the scientific principles and physiological mechanisms associated with the disciplines in animal science as well as an understanding of the principles of managerial economics.
  2. Ability to describe the application of these principles to the care and sustainable management of domestic and captive animals and the application of these principles to small businesses
  3. Illustrate the basic skills necessary to interpret, gather, and process information in an agricultural business setting
  4. Demonstrate the ability to communicate through writing and speech
