Inspire Future Leaders

Why look to UC Davis Department of Animal Science? The Department of Animal Science faculty are known for their knowledge, their research, and their ability to create exceptional learning environments for both undergraduates and graduate students.

Undergraduates can select one of three majors administered by the department: Animal Science, Animal Science & Management, and Agriculture & Environmental Education. Although the majors differ in their emphases and course requirements, they all focus on giving students sound problem-solving skills, hands-on learning, knowledge of the biology underpinning the disciplines of animal science, and principles in the care and sustainable management of domestic and captive animals. The Animal Science & Management major also incorporates managerial economics and business skills while Agriculture & Environmental Education prepares students to enter a teacher credential program in either science or agricultural and environmental education.

Animal Science courses cover fundamentals of animal science, advanced animal nutrition, genes, animals and the environment, the animals that serve society, and also serve as general education courses for non-science majors. Students also enjoy hands-on experience at all of the animal facilities or can participate in internships across campus or the regional community. Leadership growth opportunities exist with the livestock judging teams, show teams, the Dairy challenge team, Aggie Ambassadors, the Young Cattlemen’s Association, and the agricultural fraternities and sororities.

Departmental Faculty have a long history of teaching and advising excellence having received many campus and national awards including the prestigious UC Davis Prize, ASAS National teaching award, ADSA National Teaching Award, Advising Awards, APLU Regional teaching award, and Graduate mentoring awards.
