Matthias Hess' research interests include the application of cultivation- independent and cultivation- based approaches to obtain a multi- scale (from molecule to cell to population to ecosystem) understanding of microbial systems. Study how microbial systems respond to environmental changes and affect their habitats. Identification of microbes and microbial proteins of industrial and medical relevance.
