Campus Wireless Network

eduroam
Eduroam (education roaming) is a secure, world-wide roaming service developed for the international research and education community. Since eduroam is a global WIFI service, signing in is a little different than you may be used to. You will need to use your Kerberos ID (what you use to sign into CAS in the Username field) plus our home institution – @ucdavis.edu.

Information on how to connect to the eduroam wireless network.

Note about logging on to eduroam

When logging on to eduroam remember to use your UCD Login ID followed by @ucdavis.edu as your username along with your Kerberos passphrase for the password. For some folks their UCD login ID, which we commonly utilize as the username to log on to systems, is different from their mail ID before @ucdavis.edu in their email address.

For those folks it is important to remember to use their login ID followed by @ucdavis.edu instead of just their loginid or their mailid@ucdavis.edu. So, if your email address is kajohnson@ucdavis.edu and your login ID is kajohn, then you would use kajohn@ucdavis.edu as your username for eduroam. Note that the '@' stands for the 'at the domain' and the text before it stands for the the user name and the text after it means the domain. The kajohn@ucdavis.edu is a fully qualified doamin constract and stands for a user called kjaohn at the ucdavis.edu domain. In this case, this fully qualified doamin constract is different than the email address of kajohnson@ucdavis.edu.

If you have problems connecting to Eduroam on a particular day/time, you can always use the ucd-guest wireless network instead. To do this connect to the wireless network named ucd-guest. Open a web browser and you will be taken to a web page for logon. Select the option to log on with an existing account and then when prompted log on with your UCD login ID and Kerberos passphrase. Note that the ucd-guest wireless network will periodically prompt you to re-authenticate. To be clear, if it is preferable for you to use Eduroam since you can log on once and stay logged on, but if you have issues with Eduroam, this option is available to you as well.

Please contact the Food Chain IT if you have any questions or problems with wireless on campus-owned devices.

What if I cannot log on to eduroam?

If you cannot log on to eduroam, then as a temporary solution note that faculty, staff, and students can use the guest wireless network WITHOUT setting up a guest wireless account. When you can’t get on to eduroam, for whatever reason, you can usually still get on to the guest wireless. To access it select the wireless network named “ucd-guest”, then open a web browser window, which will bring up a log on screen. Choose the option to use an existing guest account. Then just use your campus login ID and Kerberos passphrase as the credentials. To be clear, UCD computing account holders do not need to set up guest wireless accounts to use the guest wireless network (they just use their existing campus computing account credentials).
